The hatred propagated by George Simion’s speeches places defenders of an open society that promotes democracy and fundamental human rights in a dangerous position.

In recent months, we have witnessed an unprecedented escalation of attacks against the values of an open society and against the organizations, activists, and journalists who defend these values.

On Wednesday, May 7, in a broadcast on Realitatea Plus, our colleagues from Funky Citizens and Declic were explicitly named by the presidential candidate George Simion as part of an „agent network that cannot care less about us” and that „will have to answer for its actions.”

We express our solidarity with the organizations named and with those unnamed by Mr. Simion. Together, we are part of the same community that believes in the rule of law, democracy, pluralism, diversity, and social solidarity. We are not an „agency” united by hidden interests, but a country united by common values. We are Romania.

We call on citizens to form their own opinions based on concrete information about the activities and results of both non-governmental organizations and journalists, and not to be influenced by disinformation or hate campaigns.

Let’s remember that the „open society” that some politicians, influencers, and media figures vilify is a society where people’s fundamental freedoms and rights are respected and protected. In such a society, people can freely express their opinions, actively participate in political and social life, associate, express themselves, and protest without fear of repression. Open societies promote diversity and social solidarity, support transparency in government, respect the rule of law, and guarantee the independence of the judiciary. This is what sets them apart from totalitarian regimes that claimed to hold the only truth and denied the right to an opinion.

Repeated and concerted attacks in recent months, ranging from insults and disinformation to death threats, attacks on the premises of organizations, and physical assaults, are endangering precisely these values. These attacks are not random, but part of a wave of pressure against those who defend democratic values, pluralism, and diversity.

We are all part of the same community and remain united in defending the values that define us.
